Action Research Community
About the Community
The Action Research Community (ARC) is an initiative of the European Academy of Management (EURAM) dedicated to strengthening the dialogue between academic research and management practice. The Action Research Community is part of EURAM Dialogue with Practitioners program.
We bring together scholars interested in Action Research within the management sciences, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and advancing this methodological approach. Our mission is to disseminate Action Research as a rigorous, impactful way of doing research, and to close the gap between theory and practice by generating knowledge with organizations rather than simply about them.
Through the community, we aim to create an inclusive space where researchers and practitioners can exchange ideas, discuss real-world experiences, develop joint projects, and promote research that makes a genuine difference beyond academic publication.
What We Do
- Community
building. We connect
scholars and practitioners across different career stages, from PhD
students to senior researchers, who share an interest in Action Research, and
create opportunities for ongoing exchange and collaboration.
- Dialogue
with Practitioners. We
bridge academia and practice, involving practitioners in our activities to
meet all real-world challenges and disruptions.
- Knowledge
sharing about methodological topics: we analyse how to develop management research when two souls
(research and practitioner) reside in the same brain. This issue goes
beyond participant observation: it includes the specificities of being, at
the same time, a decision-maker, an active contributor to the
organization’s life, and a researcher. These activities are carried out in
close cooperation with the EURAM Strategic Interest Group (SIG) Research
Method.
- Knowledge
sharing about contractual issues: We discuss how to prepare non-disclosure agreements, prepare data
collection and data security with the aim of using this data for research
purposes, and how to prepare contractual agreements to anticipate publication
constraints in academic journals.
- Conference
tracks and events. The
community organizes and coordinates Action Research tracks at the EURAM
annual conference, alongside dedicated workshops and colloquia that bring
the community together during face-to-face and hybrid events.
- Mentoring
and doctoral development. Through
mentoring activities, we support early career scholars in designing and
conducting Action Research projects, connecting them with experienced
researchers in the field. These activities are operated in close
cooperation with EURAM’s Doctoral and Early Career development programs.
- Knowledge dissemination: The community disseminates methodological resources, returns on experience, and project outcomes to help advance the rigor and visibility of Action Research within management scholarship.
