01.01.S Praxis as Art: Sustainability in Action

In resonance with the topic "Research in Action", this symposium deals with possibilities for sustainability in action by integrating prâxis, practices and practical wisdom. In Ancient Greek prâxis was interpreted to an activity engaged in their polis linked to phrónêsis. In Old Norse literature it is referred to ways of associating with others. For both traditions, praxis represents integral configuration of co-created intrinsic activities related to common good of a community. Today this understanding can be linked to the art of wisdom and designing sustainable actions as both artful and entrepreneurial endeavors.

01.02.S Business for Society as a living project

How to provide insghts on what business can do for society? How to escape from the dilemma induced by literature between purely liberal views (business and society) and utilitarian ones (business in society)? This symposium is designed to launch a global business for society project, which aims at preventing new critical and constructive theories from being hijacked by dominant theories and ideologies. Proponents and pannelists will interact in order to discuss on how to develop business for society research. They will consider the epistemological, conceptual, methodological and institutional issues such a research has to deal with in order to build up an, if not completely new, independant research stream for social good. The symposium is submitted in partnership with Society and Business Review, and Greenleaf, that will launch a book series entitled "Business for Society". This symposium is consistent with the white paper project presented at EURAM 2017.

01.03.S Defining sound governance for any type of organisation

There is no agreed definition as to what constitutes sound corporate governance, let alone sound governance of non-incorporated organisations in the public, private or non-profit sectors. Without sound governance living things cannot exist let alone survive, thrive and adapt to dynamic unknowable environments. Social scientists have remained largely oblivious to the natural laws encoded in DNA that allow engineers to design self-governing automobiles that can survive in complex dynamic environments while avoiding harm to themselves and others. Social scientists may wish to add a normative dimension for sound governance by introducing concepts like fairness? Research requires an agreed definition.

01.04.S Impact and Action-Oriented Research on Poverty & the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The first (of the 17) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) is a global call to action for business organisations, investors, Higher Education Institutions, civil society, and public sector organisations ‘to end poverty in all forms everywhere’ by 2030. This is an immense research challenge that requires innovation and experimentation.
This multifocal symposium will illustrate how SDG#1 can be achieved though (1) innovative research methods, such as visual participatory action research; (2) faculty member success stories that integrate poverty into management/business education curricula and courses, and (3) a cross-disciplinary approach to scholarly publications that fosters new ideas and new thinking.

Corporate governance stands at a crossroads. To move away from overly short-term oriented models, new models need to be developed that focus on the long-term prosperity of companies and sound management practices. The symposium will engage a dialog on how management sciences can contribute to these goals through a renewal of corporate models and corporate law. To develop corporate governance that works for companies and society, can business take place within existing legal frameworks or can we develop new institutions and legal frameworks that enable a different framing for management? 07.01.S Famous Scholars in Expatriate Management: Personal Stories about Getting Published - Managing Reviewers, Revisions, and Rejection

Building on a wildly successful 2017 symposium in Glasgow, this year we engage with four famous scholars in expatriate management about 'getting published'. High profile scholars (potentially) include Gary Oddou, Rosalie Tung, Jan Selmer, Nancy Adler, Paula Caliguiri, Mark Mendenhall, Vlad Vaiman, and Jaime Bonache (among others). In a departure from the generic format these sessions usually entail, we will instead get intimate with our famous scholars by asking them to discuss their personal journal through the highs and lows of publishing their work, including honest accounts and personal examples related to managing reviewers, revisions, and rejection. The specific focus of the symposium is to engage the audience for a full 90-minute interactive Q&A dialogue with experienced scholars whose names we typically only see in print.

01.07.S Sharing Economy: Spontaneous order of P2P Interactions and Exchanges

The core idea is not dividing a fortune and distributing the portions, as the term sharing insinuates. The key concept rather refers to mutual interactions among peers without the intermediation of central hubs. In a sense, sharing economy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) social spontaneous order.
The P2P platforms depend on two sets of customers, as in a two-sided market. The P2P exchange facilitating platforms definitely disrupt conventional sectors. For example, P2P home exchange platforms like Airbnb thoroughly compete with the hotel industry.

02.01.S Advancing Knowledge in Corporate Governance: The Role of Research Methodology

Knowledge creation in corporate governance is a double-edged sword. Research is interdisciplinary, addresses corporate governance variations due to different national institutions, and embraces both qualitative and quantitative designs. While this combination of features makes for a theoretically rich body of work, it also raises hurdles and opportunities in the publication process. This symposium will help prospective authors better design the methodology of new governance studies. The session will explore common pitfalls regarding the methodology of governance journal submissions, and also highlight recommendations for best practices. A content analysis of published governance studies will also be used to benchmark normative practices.

Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) is a novel methodology, recently published in Organizational Research Methods (Dul, 2016). The method has already been applied in fields such as, strategy, entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, and human resource management. Reactions of editors and reviewers are very promising. For example, an editor of a top journal said: “From my perspective, [this NCA paper] is the most interesting paper I have handled at this journal, insofar as it really represents a new way to think about data analyses". The purpose of this symposium is encourage interactive discussions, emphasizing alternative views from different academic disciplines as well as from practitioners in the field of sports on teamwork and team cohesion. In sports, the criteria for the level of performance are evident in that successful teamwork often becomes translated into specific results. The translation makes sport performance an ideal subject for analysis on sporting success and teamwork.

Welcome to HRM on projects! This topic is increasingly important as project organizing is now a core and inescapable principle in many industries. Often conceptualized as temporary organizations (Bakker et al, 2016), projects are established within and between organizational functions, span organizational boundaries, and populate networks. Projects are important sites where HRM activities are designed and implemented (Keegan et al, 2017). We are interested in research that addresses questions such as: What issues arise for organizations in developing human and social capital on projects?; Are HRM practitioners equipped to manage the HR aspects of projects and project based organizing?; What kinds of careers do people have on projects?; And, what are the effects of project based working on individual well-being?. International management research is based on the collection and analysis of data from many languages and employs concepts and knowledge from traditions outside the English speaking Western world. This implies ongoing and intense translation work as part of the research process. Indeed, acts of translation have been shown to be influential and transformative in the generation of knowledge. Workplace innovation (WPI) is a concept in development. It started with the idea that technological innovation alone is not enough, as renewal of socio-organisational elements is also required for organizations to become successful. The core notion and empirical finding is that employee engagement and employee involvement are a 'necessary condition' for success, which implies simultaneously achieving better quality of work and better organisational performance. New insights show that WPI can be understood as a set of complementary measures. This symposium presents and discusses new findings to explain how WPI functions and how it can be applied in practice.
