The mission of this Special Interest Group (SIG) is to facilitate and promote the development and exchange of knowledge within all areas of International Management within and beyond the academic community. In line with the European Academy of Management’s (EURAM) mission this SIG aims to be an open, international and multicultural European forum for networking and research (theoretical, empirical and methodological ) related to International Management with a particular (but not exclusive) regional focus on Europe regarding (a) the SIG community and (b) the geographical scope of empirical or conceptual research.

GT 07_00 International Management General Track
International management is an ubiquitous phenomenon in today’s business world. The general track of our SIG is interested in research addressing the challenges organisations face in an increasingly internationalised environment. We invite research on ALL subfields of International Management and International Business and we encourage multi-disciplinary studies fostering cross-pollination with other fields. We are open to conceptual work and empirical studies advancing existing research and discourse as well as fresh perspectives on international management. For the 2018 conference, responding to the conference theme, we explicitly invite research associated with knowledge creation, diffusion and the transferability of practices across national contexts.
INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT SIG STANDING TRACKS
ST 07_01 Expatriate Management
The topic of Expatriate Management (EM) usually involves physical international mobility for work purposes by skilled workers or professionals. Although the core of this topic includes internationally assigned business expatriates, it also includes alternative forms of global work where movement of people across national borders is becoming increasingly common. Therefore, EM research also examines, for example, self-initiated expatriates, expatriate academics, global talent management, safety issues, global families and expatriate entrepreneurs. Emerald Group Publishing and the Journal of Global Mobility (JGM): The Home of Expatriate Management Research, have instituted an annual JGM Best Paper Award for EM papers at EURAM Conferences.
INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT SIG TRACKS
T07_03 Interactions between cultures and management: A settled matter or rising issues?
Cross-cultural management has been acknowledged as a key issue for international management. This track welcomes research unveiling the various mechanisms through which cultural diversity intermingles with organizational dynamics. What role do cultures play in the regulation of organizational processes and social interactions? What cultural knowledge is developed and how is it used to manage intercultural interfaces? Are there (bi-cultural) boundary spanners able to overcome cultural differences and turn them into new synergistic solutions? Contributions employing multidisciplinary approaches and relying on insights from multiple cultural backgrounds as well as contextualized qualitative research and case studies concerning specific countries/contexts are very welcome.
T07_04 International Competitiveness
The International Competitiveness track invites submissions of empirical and conceptual papers investigating Competitiveness in an international context.
Scholars are invited to reflect on the determinants of competitiveness from bottom-up (micro or firm-level and mezzo or cluster-level) and top-down (mezzo or regional level and macro or national/international level) perspectives.
Gaps at the intersection of management and economics literature around competitiveness lend themselves to conceptually relevant research, with high practical impact. International competitiveness is relevant in both developing and developed nations, addressing challenges of strategy, business development, firm growth and performance, sustainability, economic development and policy making in a globalised knowledge economy.
T07_06 Strategy, Management, and Marketing in and from Emerging Markets
Emerging markets have not only attracted large inflows of FDI but are also characterized by increased outward FDI. Two key challenges remain:
- We observe increasing market failure across emerging markets. Foreign firms face difficulties in understanding local institutions, cultures, and consumers;
- Little attention has been given to outward FDI from emerging markets to developed economies and other emerging markets.
This call invites contributions in the fields of strategy, management and marketing in and from emerging markets. The geographical scope can be on Africa, BRICs, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, other emerging economies, regions and global cities.
