Letter from President
Dear colleagues and friends,
EURAM 2018 Annual Conference is approaching fast! This year we had record number of submissions for both the regular conference programme and doctoral colloquium! I am thankful to our Local Organising Committee, Conference Programme Committee, Doctoral Colloquium Chairs, our reviewers and all our SIGs who did an amazing job in dealing with more than 2000 submissions.
In March, we had the 9th edition of the EURAM Early Career Colloquium. This year LUISS University hosted young scholars across the world in their beautiful campus in Rome. The participants enjoyed this opportunity, which helped them reflect on their research practice and cross-fertilise ideas from different perspectives and contexts. Many thanks to our Vice President for EECC Pierre Dussauge, our executive officer Luisa Jaffe and the local organising team led by a dear friend and prominent scholar; Alessandro Zattoni. They put together an inspiring programme. I would also extend my thanks to all our speakers and mentors; Pierre Dussauge, Thomas Durand, Peter Mckiernan, Silke Machold, Alessandro Zattoni, Mine Karatas Ozkan, Stefan Gueldenberg, Francesco Rullani and Valentina Melliciani. In spite of their busy timetables they have enthusiastically accepted to contribute to the advancement of the young scholars in this edition. Many thanks also to our participants who supported this activity with their involvement and feedback. For our members, who could not join us in Rome, we have put a video from the event on our website.
We have also news from the European Management Review. Mustafa Ozbilgin who had been our Editor in Chief since 2014 stepped down due his multiple commitments. We are grateful to him for what he has achieved at EMR. By adhering to the principles of quality, transparency, commitment to engaged and robust scholarship, he put in practice an inclusive strategy that is open to different disciplinary, methodological and theoretical traditions and perspectives as well as observing equality of opportunity and diversity among ranks in appointing associate editors, reviewers and guest editors. He set off the practice of submissions in languages other than English. He has created Xenophobia Monitor part in order to increase awareness in widening perceptions of discrimination and Methodology Matters section. We thank Mustafa Ozbilgin and his team and wish them all the best for the future endeavours. I am delighted to announce that Yohanan Altman is our new Editor in Chief. Yohanan Altman is an outstanding scholar, who successfully created and led many academic journals during his remarkable career. He had already joined EMR a while ago as the editor of the Xenophobia Monitor part and carried out inspiring work and achieved great success in taking off this section. A very warm welcome to him and to his team!
Another good news is that we have now a new IT platform for conference management. Collaborating with different associations within EIASM and the representatives of our SIGs, our VP for conferences Dorota Dobija, VP for SIGs Remi Jardat, EIASM managing director Nicole Coopman and our executive officer Luisa Jaffe have diligently investigated different alternatives and have selected the most suitable platform that will align with the complex structure of EURAM. Many thanks for their great job!
Last but not least, I would like to remind you two deadlines: EURAM research grant submission deadline and the EURAM Conference author registration deadline. I would encourage you to check our website for more information.
I am very much looking forward to meeting you all in Reykjavik!

EURAM Annual Conferences
EURAM 2018 Conference – 20-23 June 2018, Reykjavik, University of Iceland
http://euramonline.org/annual-conference-2018
Important Deadlines
Authors registration deadline: 25 April 2018
EURAM 2018 in Reykjavik will be a party!
The president of Iceland, Dr. Gudni Th. Johannesson, will formally open the EURAM 2018 conference in Reykjavik on the 20th of June 2018. This is the first time a president of a country has opened the EURAM conference. It is important and relevant as the last couple of presidents of Iceland have been academics or have worked in close collaboration with the University of Iceland. President Johannesson field of research as an academic was Icelandic history. The previous president, Dr. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, was a professor in political science and Vigdis Finnbogadottir, the world's first democratically directly elected female president, is the energy and drive behind a new building for the Institute of Foreign Languages, which will host the Doctoral Colloquium this year. If you are lucky, you might just meet more than one president of Iceland during your EURAM conference!
The conference starts the 19th of June!
It is important to note that the EURAM 2018 conference will start on Tuesday the 19th of June 2018. It will start with the LABS. The LABS are workshops which are run jointly by academics and practitioners. The role of the labs is to discuss some specific topic which is relevant for researchers and practitioners. Each Lab is 90 minutes. This year we are offering six LABS in two time slots, at 14:00 and at 16:00:
LAB1: Writing Journal Papers
LAB2: Research in Action – Accelerating Knowledge Creation
LAB3: Nationalism & National Identities for Research
LAB4: Research Usefulness for Society
LAB5: Bridging Research and Journalism
LAB6: Management Education going forward
LAB7: Abduction: Implications for Management and Organizational Research
The EURAM welcome reception in Reykjavik will follow the Labs at 18:30 at the City Hall. The 19th of June agenda is designed to start creating important relationship and network. Networking is one of the underlying missions of the EURAM 2018 conference. We want to facilitate networking and make it possible for you to meet the right and relevant people… mostly just exciting and interesting people.
In effort to create relationship and for you to facilitate your navigation through the conference we will also for the first time have a conference app. You will be able to download the app to your smart phone or tablet early June. The app should also help you to get in contact with the other participants. It is not just for networking; we are building a community.
Crazy times in Iceland
Another underlying missions of the EURAM conference is to make it an unforgettable experience. We honestly don’t have to do very much as the time of the conference in Iceland is perfect for an authentic experience. 21st of June is the longest day of the year and it is traditionally an excuse to do something bonkers in Iceland and that sets the stage for the EURAM conference. If you arrive on the 17th of June, it is the famous independence day which Icelanders celebrate like there is no tomorrow. The nature will be just beautiful during this time of the year which you cannot come to Iceland without embracing and there are lots of exciting things like music festivals happening during the period within Reykjavik. Really, you cannot go wrong, wherever you get lost in Iceland!
If you are feeling lost during the off-hours of the conference, we have created the so called SIG Hang-Outs. The SIG Hang-Outs are bars which have been selected for each and every SIG in effort to help people to meet other EURAM participants with similar research focus. The saying is, that one beer can be the start of a beautiful research.
It is, however, not the nature, music or research which will excite Icelanders most during the week of EURAM. It is football! Iceland qualified for the first time ever for the World Cup finals in men’s football. Iceland is the smallest nation, in terms of population, which has managed to do this – biggest in terms of ambition! Icelanders are around 334 thousand, and just to remind you that the inhabitants of Glasgow are 599 thousand – which will hopefully be cheering for Iceland as the Scotland national team did not qualify. So, there will be a football fever in Iceland. A good tip is to know the names of two or three Icelandic players and you will be instantly cherished by the locals.
It’s a party! – Dancing with the whales.
The EURAM 2018 conference will end this year on a Friday, the 22nd of June. It will end like no other EURAM conference has ended, with a great party. We have rented one of the biggest tourist attractions in Reykjavik, the Whale Museum, for the party. We only have limited tickets for this event so please try to get hold of them during the registration process as this will be a once in lifetime event… just as EURAM 2018 in Reykjavik will most certainly be. Don’t just think about it as a conference, think about it as the unforgettable party where you were dancing with the whales!

EURAM Early Career Colloquium
9th EURAM Early Career Colloquium (EECC 2018)
“Leaders of Tomorrow: Building a Successful Career in Management Academia”
The 9th EURAM Early Career Colloquium was held at LUISS University in Rome from March 18 to 20, 2018. It was organized by Professor Alessandro Zattoni from LUISS.
The Colloquium brought together 21 participants and 10 mentors and keynote speakers. Each junior faculty participant got to present his/her paper and receive detailed feedback, first from one of the mentors (including the EURAM President, Prof. Sibel Yamak and EURAM President-Elect, Prof. Thomas Durand), then from the audience. In addition, a number of plenary sessions on such topics as “Building a Successful Career in Academia”, “Responsible Research and Teaching” or “Meet the Editors” provided opportunities for extensive discussions. A few PhD students from LUISS also attended some of the sessions and joined the discussions.
In addition to the purely academic programme, several social events were organized as part of this year’s Colloquium. We first participated in a very stimulating walking tour of Rome, guided by a very knowledgeable and captivating speaker. This was followed by a dinner at a typical pizzeria where participants and mentors got to “break the ice” and become acquainted. Another dinner at a traditional – and very pleasant – trattoria provided a setting in which to continue the discussions – both academic and personal – that had been initiated during the academic sessions.
Overall, the 9th EURAM Early Career Colloquium was a most pleasant experience for all involved. I am also confident the junior faculty who participated found it was a very valuable experience which has helped them think differently about their research and the development of their academic career.
I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank Professor Alessandro Zattoni who agreed to organize the 9th EURAM Early Career Colloquium, managed it very skillfully and ultimately made it a great success on all dimensions.

Together with coauthors from Singapore (led by Xinxin Li, National University of Singapore), Dr. Jamie L. Gloor (Technical University of Munich & University of Zurich) published an article in Academy of Management Review on schadenfreude (i.e., pleasure in others' pain) at work. The authors highlight this counter-normative emotion as a reason why workplace mistreatment continues: observers do not always feel congruent emotions with victims, an initial feeling that evolves into two types of schadenfreude and leads to specific behavioral outcomes, depending on attributions of deservingness as well as individual (e.g., moral foundations) and contextual (e.g., incivility climate) moderators. Book publication: ‘Employee Motivation in Saudi Arabia: An Investigation into the Higher Education Sector’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). Authors: Rodwan Fallatah and Jawad Syed
This book investigates the relevance of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs as a theory of motivation, whilst taking into account variances in culture and individual experiences and perspectives. Focussing on higher education, the book responds to the call for providing alternative conceptual models, other than those originating from the Anglo-Saxon world. The book uses the case of Saudi Arabia to understand motivation in a collectivist, highly religious and conservative society of the Middle East. Providing empirical findings from a study carried out at two Saudi universities differing in their religious outlook, this book reveals a hierarchy of needs that is significantly different from the theory proposed by Maslow. Religion, culture and gender are explored in detail as the study investigates the relevance of Maslow’s theory in a region that is of growing interest to policy-makers and practitioners in North America and Europe.

Edited by Chris Brewster (University of Reading, UK) and Jean-Luc Cerdin (HEC, Paris), HRM in mission-driven organisations: managing people in the not-for-profit sector (Palgrave-Macmillan, 978-3-319-57582-7) takes an international management perspective on a series of different sectors within not-for-profit organizations and, via a short chapter on social enterprises, those in the for-profit arena. Authors from different, mainly European, countries examine the context and the requirements that, and the specific missions of each sector, create for management in the governmental, inter-governmental, charity and volunteer, religious, cultural, sports and social enterprise sectors. Given the under-researched nature of these enterprises and how different the management process needs to be in organizations that are not driven by the profit motive, the book offers new information, examples and debates for scholars in management in not-for-profits.

The Lunchtime Leap! Lunchtime is the Most Creative Time of the Day!
In today’s knowledge-based economies, creativity has become a central focus for organizations and managers. Yet, developing group creativity in learning environments still remains a challenge. In this research, Dermot Breslin (Sheffield University, UK) studies the creative processes at play in groups, by using an experimental design to explore the time-of-day effect on group creativity. Examining 36 groups of university students, Experiment 1 explored differences in creative performance of two tasks between morning and afternoon, and the optimal time of day for group creative exercises. Experiment 2 comprised 18 groups, and further studied the effect of chronotype on group creativity in the morning versus the afternoon. In both experiments a significant relationship was found between the timing of the group task and creative performance, with a peak in creative fluency around midday. This research thus points to a significant time of day effect in the creative process in groups with implications for the scheduling of problem-solving and creative tasks in education enviroments.

Workshops & Conferences
The First Global Conference on Creating Value - May 23-24 2018, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK
A major conference for business leaders and academics to assess and co-create how to build ‘value’ in a turbulent 21st century global economy. This conference is a wake-up call to improve our understanding of the concept of value (and values) and, moreover, to find ways of creating value consciously and more abundantly which will in turn allow us to compete more effectively, to build social value and to thrive and be ready for the challenges of a changing and disruptive world.
The early Bird Rate (£350) is available until February 28; PhD students enjoy a reduced rate (£100). Register at http://goo.gl/t6Hz2c. For inquiries, contact us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
SEAANZ conference - July 4 - 6 2018 - Small businesses operate in a turbulent environment which offers both incredible challenge as well as opportunity. From the proliferation of information and communication technologies to international market opportunities and the regulations within the business environment, small business owner-managers’ face questions about the future of work – is it one of constraint and threat or one of incredible potential? We believe that it is very much the latter. The role played by government bodies, incubators and accelerators alongside small business associations to empower entrepreneurship as a whole in the small business environment needs further exploration. In light of this discussion, we invite papers for the upcoming Small Enterprise Association of Australia and New Zealand (SEAANZ) conference July 4th-6th 2018, UNE Future Campus Parramatta, Sydney Australia.

Discusses problems of research into microfinance for poverty alleviation and advocates a sceptic approach.
